City Announces Timeline for Re-opening Remaining City Facilities

The City of Wetaskiwin has begun to re-open its facilities in a multi-phase approach that ensures compliance with public health and safety standards.

On June 29, the City began to re-open its facilities in alignment with the Province's Stage 2 re-entry strategy.

“The City’s re-opening strategy strikes a balance of meeting the needs of the community while ensuring everyone’s safety,” remarked Tyler Gandam, Mayor of the City of Wetaskiwin. “We will continue to modify our approach in alignment with provincial recommendations while remaining mindful of what makes sense here at home.”

Wetaskiwin City Council considered and approved the following facility re-opening schedule at their regular June 22, 2020 Council meeting.

June 29 Multiplex facility open to leaseholders with restrictions
July 6 Drill Hall, Memorial Arts Centre and By-the-Lake Park Hall available for booking with restrictions
July 13 Wetaskiwin City Hall, Public Works Office, Wetaskiwin Airport Office and Wetaskiwin Archives open with temporary hours and restrictions
July 24 Fitness area of the Manluk Centre: Wetaskiwin Regional Aquatics & Fitness open with restrictions
July 31 Pool area of the Manluk Centre: Wetaskiwin Regional Aquatics & Fitness open with restrictions
August 24 The Civic Centre (Twin Arenas) open with restrictions

The City’s goal is to re-open the facilities as soon as possible for the public to enjoy while trying to minimize the financial realities of doing so. Each facility will re-open with a set of restrictions aligning with current provincial orders. The multi-phased opening approach allows for a more thorough implementation of the City’s new health and safety protocols to ensure everyone can safely access these facilities.

Early estimates show a net budget loss of roughly $115,000 due to the approved re-opening timeline. City Council has instructed City administrators to fund this shortfall from reserves—a move designed to keep the tax base unaffected.

Details about the restrictions being implemented for each facility will be shared online in the coming days here on the City's COVID-19 portal.
